Founded in 1970, United Hospital Center (UHC) is an acute care facility in Bridgeport, West Virginia. The community hospital has 292 private inpatient rooms and a medical staff that consists of more than 140 primary care and specialty physicians. UHC employs more than 2,000 associates and is a member of WVU Medicine.
In 2010, United Hospital Center opened in a new location to better serve the growing community. Soon after, Nurse Manager Karla Tucker, RN, BSN, CCRN realized the facility needed more nurses to keep up with the high demand.
“As the House Supervisor at the time, I also felt intense pressure and responsibility to provide adequate staff,” explains Karla.
So, she decided to hire travel nurses to fill the gap. Unfortunately, Karla discovered this solution created its own set of unique challenges.
“Many of these agency nurses were unreliable,” says Karla. “Sometimes, they wouldn’t show up to work their shift. When we attempted to call them, we discovered their phone number was a non-working number.”
Over time, these challenges began to wear on Karla and her team. She knew something needed to change. Then she took a meeting with Medical Solutions Plus, a leading managed services provider. The MSP’s attention to detail really stood out to her.
“They listened to our team as we explained UHC’s culture, clientele, and staffing patterns,” recalls Karla. “They toured our facility, really listened to our concerns, and asked follow-up questions. They ensured our team they would go to great lengths to provide quality nurses through their vast network.”
Today, three years after teaming up with Medical Solutions Plus, Karla’s former staffing issues are a distant memory. She credits the Medical Solutions Plus Clinical Team and their thorough screening process for the remarkable turnaround.
“Our facility now has a 100% fill rate, including hard-to-fill positions in the Operating Room and nightshift weekends in the Emergency Department,” says Karla. “The nurses they provide are ones I would hire myself.”
The MSP also played an instrumental role in providing travel nurses before, during, and after the facility’s EPIC conversion.
“I would give Medical Solutions Plus a 110% satisfaction score if I could,” says Karla. “Like WVU Medicine UHC, Medical Solutions Plus’s nurses have a passion for patient care.”
